What's Up With This Place?  HoYay?  What The Hell Is That??

Alex & Olivia?
Yes!  Alex and Olivia!!  The site is dedicated to the wonderfully written subtext that occurs between the two greatest leading ladies to ever grace a Law & Order Series: Alex Cabot and Olivia Benson.  Now, don't go getting all pissy at me.  I know there are plenty of Olivia/Elliot and Olivia/Casey shippers out there who are probably shaking their heads and saying "Nope!  Never happen!" but you know what?  That is the beauty of Subtext!  We all get to see what we want to see and interpret it in our own way.  What I see is Alex and Olivia. The long looks and the zero personal space... Hey, if this doesn't rock your sox then there is a big wide world out there just a Google away!  I won't mess with your fantasy...  don't mess with mine!

HoYay?  WTF?  Are you speaking english?
HoYay stands for Homoeroticism Yay! and is defined as follows:

1.) Homoerotic subtext in film, books or movies.  Usually followed by a feeling of glee in the viewer.  Can also relate to homoerotic films in general.

2.) The word used to describe a homoerotic or homoromantic subtext between two characters, generally on a television show.  Where one sees HoYay is, of course, extremely subjective, though in some cases it can be canon, not just subtext, as in the episode of 'Angel' wherein Spike says "Angel and I were never intimate... apart from that one time."

Why am I just hearing about this now??
Well, that I couldn't tell you.  Subtext has been alive and well for decades.  And HoYay, while the definition may have just recently been phrased, has         existed right along with it!  From Star Trek (Ahem...Janeway/Seven), to Xena: Warrior Princess, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and everything in between. Check the net for SLASH fiction.  It is out there in outrageous amounts, both male/male and female/female.  (Of course, here at the ADA's Office, we only have the femslash kind!)

Can't we get in trouble for this?
Everything has a gray area!  I have found the best way to stay out of trouble is to focus on the characters, not the actors.  It is no wonder so many actors and actresses refuse to play gay parts, with how often people blur the lines and identify the real person with the character they are playing.  In any event my feeling is, these ladies are wonderfully generous for giving us as much of themselves as they do.  The rest should be their own.  As such, I will never post actor fiction on my site.  I am not knocking it or condemning it. (Some of it is quite good!)  It just doesn't have a place here. (Actor Fic:  Slash fiction written around the actual actors or actresses themselves instead of the characters they play.  And yes, this type of fanfiction does have very real legal ramifications, so be careful!)
